How to Make Cocada: a Brazilian Sweet Treat

Cocada is a sweet treat made with coconut and sugar – with a pinch of heaven dust! Back in my school days, teachers used to tell this sweet was brought by African slaves and it became very popular in the Northeast side of Brazil.

It is very simple to make and even more delicious to eat! Cocada has a crusty layer that may fool at the first sight. But, after the first bite you will feel like in the food heaven!

Cocada

Ingredients

  • 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups sugar, sifted
  • 1 cup whole milk, at roomy temperature
  • 2 Tbsp salted butter, plus more for greasing the work surface
  • 5 oz. shredded coconut, plus more for sprinkling

Directions

  • Grease an even surface with butter. It may be a baking sheet or a kitchen counter.
  • Over a medium heat, in a medium sized saucepan, cook all the ingredients. During this time, you must keep on stirring to not burn the mixture.
  • After 5-10 minutes, the mixture starts to thicken. When the mixture starts to release from the bottom and from the sides of the saucepan, you will turn off the heat and spread, evenly, onto the greased baking sheet/kitchen counter.
  • Let it cool for 1 hour or more. Once it is cooled, break the bar into small bars {cocadas} or cut it using a knife. Sprinkle cocadas with leftover shredded coconut.
