Homemade Grenadine in 3 Easy Steps

If you use Grenadine to sweeten up your cocktails or drinks, (gotta love a good shirley temple) why not make it yourself at home? It only takes 2 ingredients and 3 easy steps to do it, and because you made it in your own kitchen, you know exactly what’s in it. Cut down on excesses of sugar and artificial flavorings found in sodas by whipping up your own carbonated beverage: all it takes is a little of your homemade Grenadine mixed with club soda or sparkling water and voila! There are plenty of other simple, tasty applications for it, so get creative today!

Ingredients

32 oz (4 cups) of pomegranate juice*
2 cups of sugar

*Note: Instead of pomegranate juice, you can use real pomegranates. You’ll need about 2 pounds of pomegranates. Separate out the seeds and add them to 2 cups of simmering water. Let them simmer until the seeds just start releasing juice. Then, pour the mixture through a cheesecloth over a bowl and press out their juices. Discard the seeds. If you’re using this method, you will probably want to use more sugar – an equal part to however many cups of juice you got out of your pomegranates. 

Directions

  1. Bring your pomegranate juice to a boil. Once it reaches boiling point, turn the heat down to a simmer and let your juice reduce until it’s thickened to about 2 cups of liquid. (This will take about 12-15 minutes.) If you want a thicker syrup, you can let it simmer down a bit more.
  2. Add the sugar and let it dissolve into your syrup.
  3. Once the sugar’s dissolved, just pour it into a bottle of your choice and let it cool or chill in the fridge!
